McLaren R1
“Racing Without Risk. Speed without sacrifice.”
Designed by Mahan Rasouli
McLaren R1 is an autonomous electric racing concept inspired by IndyCar, designed to redefine the future of motorsport. By removing the driver from the cockpit and relocating control to a remote VR‑based driving system, the R1 enables extreme racing performance without endangering human life. The concept pushes speed, precision, and competition beyond current limits while maintaining absolute safety.
Every surface sculpted in Blender 3D and textured in Substance 3D Painter to an obsessive level of detail – down to the caliper bolts and rotor screws. Two bespoke liveries, including the official Gulf heritage scheme, were developed to showcase the full design language.

Clean body, no livery – focus on form
The Problem
Traditional motorsport pushes human drivers to physical and mental limits, where increased speed directly increases the risk of severe injury or death. This limitation restricts how far racing technology and competition can evolve. Motorsport needs a new paradigm that allows higher performance without human sacrifice.
The Solution
McLaren R1 introduces a fully driverless racing platform controlled remotely through immersive virtual reality. Drivers experience real-world racing conditions in real time, while remaining completely safe outside the vehicle. This system allows motorsport to intensify competition, speed, and risk-taking – without risking lives.
Key Innovations
Remote VR‑Based Driving
Immersive virtual reality with real‑world physical feedback from the car’s sensors. Drivers feel true track surface, wind, and G‑forces through motion rigs.
Fully Autonomous Platform
The car is completely empty – no cockpit, no seat. Every component serves aerodynamics, cooling, and pure speed.
1‑Second Battery Swap
Two top‑mounted rectangular batteries swapped automatically during pit stops, enabling non‑stop racing.
100% Electric AWD
Four independent electric motors on all wheels for extreme torque vectoring and maximum agility.
McLaren Design DNA
Hammerhead nose, teardrop canopy, and low aggressive stance – sculpted in Blender and refined to the last detail.
Real‑World Physics Feedback
Professional sim-racing with actual world physics, not programmed approximations. Ideal for driver training.
Revolutionary Battery Swap
Two quick‑swap battery packs on the upper surface, changed by an automated pit‑stop robot in under one second.

McLaren Design DNA
Every surface sculpted in Blender 3D and textured in Substance 3D Painter. The rim detail, camera pods, and even rotor screws are modeled to perfection.

Ultra‑Detailed Rim

Side Camera Pod
Front, back and two main cameras replace traditional mirrors for improved aero and visibility

Hood corner – flowing surface lines
Two Distinct Liveries
Created in Substance 3D Painter with ultra‑high‑resolution materials.

Kitsune
Dynamic black, white, and #bd0000 red – sharp contrasts inspired by the McLaren spirit.

Gulf Heritage
Modern reinterpretation of the iconic Gulf Oil livery. Dark blue, cream‑gold, red‑orange.

Impact & Sustainability
McLaren R1 redefines motorsport infrastructure by combining autonomous technology, remote driving, and electric performance. By removing the driver from the vehicle, it eliminates life-threatening risk while enabling higher racing intensity. The fully electric system with ultra-fast battery swapping supports cleaner energy use and long-term sustainability, aligning with UN SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.

IDA Design Awards 2023
Gold Winner – Automotive & Transport
“Winning the Gold award at IDA 2023 for the McLaren R1 was a turning point in my career. It validated my belief that motorsport can evolve beyond physical risk while staying true to its competitive spirit. This recognition drives me to keep pushing the boundaries of automotive design and innovation.” – Mahan Rasouli
Vision: Reality without compromise
The McLaren R1 is neither a simulator nor a conventional race car – it is a platform where motorsport can evolve freely, pushing technology, speed, and human skill to their absolute limits, without putting human life on the line.
